fiscal year 2025

Sara Dang

Sara is a medical student at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. She is from Illinois but has lived in Texas for the majority of her life. She attended the University of Texas at Dallas where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and a minor in Public Health. After graduating, she worked as a research manager in a lung cancer lab and as a medical receptionist before continuing her studies at L. Frederick Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. There, she earned her Master’s in Biomedical Sciences before beginning medical school.

She is a founding officer of FSOM’s Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association chapter where she served as the Volunteer Chair and organized the NMDP, formerly Be The Match, Bone Marrow Registry Drive event for the inaugural chapter. Outside of school, she loves cooking, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

Kavya John

Kavya is currently a third-year medical student at FSOM. I am from Seattle, WA but I have lived in several places including Texas, Illinois, and Massachusetts! I graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a degree in Biology and minors in Spanish and Statistics. Outside of school, I really enjoy running and love signing up for different races (both in and outside of El Paso) because it is an excuse to travel to new places! Other passions of mine include hanging out with kiddos, so I occasionally tutor or volunteer to host workshops at the local Gigi’s Playhouse here in El Paso. I am hoping to pursue pediatrics after medical school!

Yujin Kim

Yujin is a medical student at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. She is a native Dallasite and attended Emory University, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology. After graduating, she worked at the National Institutes of Health on multiple projects on developing algorithms for predicting disease progression and individualized treatment planning of multiple sclerosis using machine learning. Since 2017 in Georgia, she has been leading National Two Step, whose aim is to teach the general public hands-only CPR and empower community members with the confidence and importance of their help to aid/call for help when in need. Outside of school, she loves to travel, climb, hike, camp, and cook for her loved ones and friends.

Jose Carlos Martinez

Jose Carlos is currently a third-year medical student at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. He is originally from Mexico City, and attended Columbia University, where he graduated with his Bachelor’s in Neuroscience and Behavior and a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology. Within PLFSOM he is involved with student government, the Latino Medical Student Association, and the El Paso HEAT organization which aims to bring education and medical services to the local El Paso community.

Outside of school, he is a big board game enthusiast, loves watching several TV series, and is working towards his goal of visiting every national park in the US.

Katie McGrath

Katie is medical student at the Foster School of Medicine. Her family is former military, so she has lived all over the United States but is now officially from Colorado. She attended undergrad at Trinity University in San Antonio, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and minor in Chemistry. She entered medical school directly after graduating and became involved in the Westside Free Clinic soon after that. Outside of school, she loves to go antiquing, hiking, and hunting for amethyst and smoky quartz crystals in the Rocky Mountains.

Rogelio Rojas

Rogelio Rojas is a medical student at Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Class of 2026. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2019. During his time there, he contributed to Operation COVID Shield, a task force dedicated to educating and empowering Hidalgo County residents during the 2020 pandemic, while pursuing a Master’s degree in Biochemistry. Today, he remains passionate about serving the community by working with student-run clinics and collaborating with local high schools to inspire and introduce the medical profession to today’s youth.

Outside of academics and clinical activities, Rogelio enjoys weight lifting, playing board games, and exploring new recipes in the kitchen. He is committed to fostering wellness and engagement both in and out of the clinic.

clinic flow

Registration

Medical student leadership scheduled to be “on-call” throughout the month. During clinic, duties include scheduling new patients, follow-up visits, calling in prescriptions, and precharting.

Triage and Vitals

Premedical students will assist patients in obtaining vitals and prepare the patient for a patient room. This also provides an opportunity to teach and work with premedical students throughout the clinic day.

Medical Students: History and Physical

3rd and 4th year medical students lead encounters, obtaining a full history and physical examination on the patient to develop their professional skillset.

Attending Physician Presentation/Visit

Medical students will present their findings to the attending physician, after which the whole team will then go see the patient together. Medical students help prepare discharge paperwork, referrals, laboratory orders, and learn about the rest of the clinic workflow.

Labs, Prescriptions, and Referrals

All necessary services are rendered under the attending physician’s orders.
Patients needing more specialized care are provided referrals. For example, we provide referrals for cancer prevention screenings, such as pap smears, and serves as a liaison/location for different collaborations with other existing services.

Social Worker and Mental Health Visits

We are able to redirect patients to socioeconomic resources: appropriate financial services, building sustainable support networks, and providing crisis intervention.

We also provide psychiatric care, though we do refer patients out for psychotherapy.
